Pierogi can be topped with a wide variety of toppings from butter, sour cream, or Greek yogurt to more elaborate toppings such caramelized onions and bacon.  One of our favorite pierogi toppings is a yogurt garlic sauce which you can do plain or with added spices to make it zesty.

Caramelized Onion Topping

1 chopped yellow onion
1-2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tsp salt

Add chopped onion, salt and olive oil to pan, cover, stir and slowly cook till onion is amber brown.  Add more olive oil if it starts to stick. It takes about 10-15 minutes, so boil your pierogi for 10 minutes while onion is caramelizing. Remove boiled pierogi on to a plate to cool (can add butter on plate too so they don’t stick).  Check onions, they should be soft and sweet and a dark amber color, not hard or crunchy.  Add cooled pierogi to pan with onions, mix together gently and enjoy!  Top with sour cream.

Bacon, Onion, & Sage Pierogi Topping

1 chopped yellow onion
2-3 tablespoons olive oil or butter
2-3 chopped garlic cloves
Chopped bacon
Chopped Sage
Salt and pepper to taste

Add chopped onion, bacon, salt and pepper to pan (if omitted bacon, add olive oil to pan), cover, stir and cook till onion is amber brown. The onion should be soft and sweet, not hard.  Turn heat down and add garlic and herbs, cook for 1-2 minutes, then add already boiled and cooled Pierogi, mix together gently and enjoy!  Top with sour cream.

Onion & Sausage Pierogi Topping

1 cup chopped yellow onions
2-3 of favorite sausages sliced
2-3 chopped garlic cloves (optional)
salt and pepper to taste

Cook sausage according to directions, add onion and garlic and sauté until brown, then pour over a plate of boiled Pierogi.  You can also sauté the cooked Pierogi with the onions and sausage for a crispy texture.  Enjoy with sour cream or favorite mustard!

1 clove garlic, minced
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon sea salt
2 teaspoons sugar
2 tablespoons chopped parsley and herbs
Pepper to taste

Mix all together, adjust to your taste, serve with Pierogi.  Can add hot sauce for an zesty kick!

1-2 tablespoons butter
2-3 chopped garlic cloves (optional)
